Feb 26 8am .. 10:30am, LMS

1. Discusses the map/chart projection, trade-offs or distortions in projections which includes: • conformality • distance • direction • scale • area 2. Differentiate the four general classes of projections • Cylindrical • Conic • Azimuthal • Miscellaneous 3. Identifies the advantages, disadvantages and uses of different map projections with emphasis on Mercator and Gnomonic projections, among others: • Lambert Conformal • Polar Stereographic • Polyconic

6. Topic 5 - Nautical Charts

Feb 27 8am .. 10:30am, LMS

1. Defines ‘natural scale’ of a chart 2. Describes the requirements of a chart appropriate for marine navigation 3. Identifies the Mercator chart as a mathematical projection and understands the principles of its construction 4. Describes the properties of the chart and the degree to which it meets navigational requirements and also its limitations

7. Topic 6 - Chart Symbols and Abbreviations

Feb 28 8am .. 10:30am, LMS

1. Discusses the contents of the Chart No. 1 (US Charts) and NP 5011 (UKHO) and how to use it to identify chart symbols and abbreviations. 2. Familiarizes with chart symbols, common symbols and abbreviations which includes, but not limited to: • PA, PD • Compass rose, North, and Magnetic variation • Coastline, surveyed and surveyed • Important buildings and structures such as mast, chimney, refinery, etc. • Structures in ports such as breakwater, berth, buoys, etc. • Depth of the water, elevation of bridges, and breadth of canals • Type of seabed 3. Outlines the important chart symbols and abbreviations according to sections of Chart No. 1 and NP 5011 as follows: • General • Topography • Hydrography • Navigation Aids and Services

8. Topic 7 - Interpretation of Chart symbols and abbreviations

Mar 1 8am .. 10:30am, LMS

1. Interprets the symbols and abbreviations on the nautical chart 2. Recognizes and demonstrates the use of the symbols and abbreviations on a chart, especially Lighthouses, buoys, beacons, radio beacons and other navigational marks 3. Identifies the characteristics and range of lights, symbols for chart depths and nature of the bottom. 4. Recognizes coastlines, coastline contours, bottom topography, coast and radar-responsive targets 5. Recognizes traffic lanes and separation zones

9. Topic 8 - Chart scale

Mar 5 8am .. 10:30am, LMS

Topic 1. Demonstrate knowledge in classifying nautical chart, Scales ranges, and Use such as: • Sailing chart • General chart • Coastal chart • Harbour chart 2. Differentiate the small scale and large-scale charts. 3. Distinguish the different charts according to its scale and use.

10. Topic 9 - Catalogue of charts and Publications

Feb 15 8am .. 10:30am, LMS

1. Explains the chart catalogue and its uses 2. Demonstrates the use of a chart catalogue (NP 131) to obtain the appropriate charts and nautical publication such as: • locate the correct section given ports of departure and arrival • extract the charts to be used given ports of departure and arrival • extract the publications to be used based on ports of departure and arrival • extract information about the chart related to edition dates and scale (chart scale; large or small scale; classification of chart

11. Topic 10 - Sailing Directions

Feb 16 8am .. 10:30am, LMS

1. Discusses the importance of Nautical Publications such as Sailing Directions as planning guide, conducting a passage and determining ship’s position. 2. Identifies the sailing directions with worldwide coverage. 3. Describes the significant of sailing directions providing local knowledge of routes and landmarks, which would typically be provided by a local marine pilot. 4. Demonstrates the use of Sailing Directions in planning, navigation, and port approaches.

12. Topic 11 - Ocean Passage for the World

Feb 17 8am .. 10:30am, LMS

1. Explains the use of the Ocean Passages for the World (NP136) and how it supports the planning of deep-sea voyages on most major routes, with details of weather, currents, ice hazards and distances between major ports. 2. Demonstrates the use of Ocean Passages for the World which includes: • Individual chapters covering each of the world’s oceans, with details of weather, climate, winds, currents, swell, seasonal • factors and ice hazards • Coverage of the world's busiest and emerging trade routes to help bridge crew and shore side staff with route planning and the • calculation of arrival times • Numerous route diagrams and tabulated route data to help users find information quickly, as well as chartlets clearly • demonstrating the effects of climate, wave heights and load line zones.
