Industrial Chemistry & Tribology

Industrial Chemistry and Tribology

This course focuses on the basic construction and operation principles of propulsion plant and auxilliary machinery specifically on fluid flow characteristics, physical and chemical properties of fuels, lubricants and cooling systems to maintain a safe and efficient operation, surveillance and performance assessment of onboard machinery and systems.  The course enables them to demonstrate procedures and practices associated with maintaining machinery parameters within normal operating condition. The performance of the students is assessed in a written formative/summative exam that will gauge their learning towards the course period. By the end of the course, the students can test and analyze fuels, lubricants and cooling water and recomend treatment to achieve the standard while maintaining safe engineering watch duties.

Here is the class outline:

1. Prelim Period

Basic construction & operation principles of machinery systems including fluid flow characteristics of lubricating oil, fuel oil, & cooling systems.

2. Midterm Period

Basic construction & operation principles of machinery systems including fluid flow characteristics of lubricating oil, fuel oil & cooling systems (Continuation).

3. Semi-final Period

Physical and chemical properties of fuel oil & lubricants.

4. Final Period

The efficient operation, surveillance, performance assessment & maintaining safety of propulsion plant & auxiliary machinery.
