DECK WATCHKEEPING 1 - Collision Regulations
The course outlines the Convention on the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea, 1972 as amended to achieve thorough knowledge of its content, application and intent in maintaining a safe navigational watch and use all available means appropriate to the prevailing circumstances and conditions to avoid risk of collision.
The students are to be engaged into various activities such as participative discussion and simulated exercises using approved-type ship bridge simulator. To check the student’s progress in attaining the competence, written and practical assessments are to be conducted.
As final assessment of competence acquired, students are going to perform practical exercise of executing collision avoidance using an approved-type simulator within the criteria set by the STCW Code under column 4 and in compliance with COLREGs ’72 as amended.

1. Topic 1: History, Principles of Collision Regulations and Causes of collisions

Determines the basic knowledge of the history, legalities including the amendments and development of the International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea, 1972, as amended. 2. Outlines the International Regulations for Preventing Collision at Sea, 1972, as amended. 3. Analyse the different causes of collisions and the statistic of fatalities during the incident |
2. Topic 2: Collision Regulation 1972 (Part A - General) Rule 1 – Application Rule 2 - Responsibility

The Student must be able to: 1. Explains the application of the rules as set out in Rule 1 2. Interpret the application of collision regulation under Rule 1 3. Describes the responsibility to comply with the rules as set out in Rule 2 4. Identify the precautions which may be required by the ordinary practice of seamen or special circumstances which may make a departure from the rules necessary |
